Code of Professional Conduct and Practice

The Code of Professional Conduct and Practice (the Code) sets out the standards expected of you, and is intended to support and guide your behaviours and judgements as a registrant working in education and training roles in Wales.

Good practice guides

Our suite of guides have been written to complement the Code and aim to support you in complying with it. Each focus on a specific area such as tackling racism, positive working relationships, and using social media responsibly. Be sure to check back as new guides are published regularly.

Professional Learning Passport (PLP)

As education practitioners, continuous reflection, learning, and development are essential to your role. Your PLP, is a flexible online tool specifically designed to help you capture, reflect upon, and share your learning, all with the aim of shaping your ongoing professional development and practice.

EBSCO and Meddwl Mawr

As an added bonus, your PLP gives you free access to EBSCO, the world’s largest full text research database for education professionals, there to help you undertake reading and research to further develop your practice and ideas. Educators Wales

Educators Wales (funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by the EWC) is the go-to website for those seeking new job opportunities. Boasting the largest number of vacancies in Wales’ education sector, it gives you instant access to a diverse range of positions from across Welsh schools and further education colleges, adult/work-based learning providers, youth work organisations, and more.

The team also offer a free recruitment, advocacy, and information service to individuals seeking progression opportunities as educators. That includes comprehensive support including application and CV writing, and interview skills workshops.

We are happy to organise presentations at your workplace. Popular topics include the PLP, the Code, workforce data, and our fitness to practise work. We also have recorded presentations available to watch on-demand.

It’s important that we hold the correct personal details for you. This includes qualifications, contact details, language preferences, and employment details. You can ensure your details are accurate and up to date at any time by logging into your MyEWC account.

All practitioners who are required to register with us must pay an annual registration fee.

Fees for 2022-23

The following fees are decided by Welsh Government and are necessary to register with us.

If you are registered in more than one category, for example, FE teacher and FE learning support worker, you will only need to pay one fee. However, you will pay the highest fee of the two categories. The fee is the same whether you work full or part-time.

How to pay

Your employer will deduct the fee from your salary at the end of March every year. If you are not in contracted employment and your fee is not paid by your employer, you will need to pay us directly. You can do this online between the beginning of February and the end of March each year.

If you are submitting a new application, the payment page is the last page of the application form.

Tax relief

Your registration fee is eligible for tax relief and does not affect your ability to claim tax relief on existing teacher association or union subscriptions. To claim tax relief, please contact your local tax office. 

Being registered with us is a statutory requirement for:

• school teachers (QTS required to register as a school teacher)
• school learning support workers
• independent school teachers
• independent school learning support workers
• further education (FE) teachers
• FE learning support workers
• independent special post-16 institution teachers
• independent special post-16 institution support workers
• work-based learning practitioners
• youth workers ( mandatory qualification required, or working towards a qualification)
• youth support workers ( mandatory qualification required, or working towards a qualification)

Employers have a legal obligation to make sure that their employees are registered with us before they start work. This applies to employees working full-time, part-time (including hourly), or supply.
