Another year of safeguarding learners and young people, supporting educators, and strengthening public trust

We have today (Wednesday, 15 July) published our suite of annual reports including our Annual Report and Accounts for the year ending 31 March 2026.

The report, which was laid before the Senedd, showcases another year of impactful delivery. It also includes detailed accounts for the 2025-26 financial year which have been audited by the Auditor General for Wales, receiving an unqualified audit opinion.

Some of our key achievements over the past year include:

  • maintaining a register of more than 91,000 practitioners
  • processing more than 18,000 new applications for registration
  • conducting 358 fitness to practise cases to safeguard learners and young people, and uphold public confidence
  • issuing more than 2,322 awards relating to qualified teacher status and statutory induction
  • delivering 243 support sessions and presentations to registrants and stakeholders on a range of topics including our role, the Code, the Professional Learning Passport, and Educators Wales
  • advertising 6,455 education job vacancies via Educators Wales
  • contributing to more than 40 national steering groups and responded to 24 consultations and calls for evidence

2025-26 also saw us publish a revised Code of Professional Conduct and Practice. The Code sets out the standards expected of our registrants, while also providing learners and young people, parents/guardians, employers and the public with a clear understanding of the standards they can expect from registered practitioners. Recognising the importance of making the Code accessible to all, we published it in a range of formats, including, for the first time, in British Sign Language (BSL).

Reflecting on her first year as Chief Executive of the EWC, Lisa Winstone said “Over the past year, I have seen first-hand the commitment and professionalism of colleagues across the EWC in delivering our important regulatory role.

“Our Annual Report and Accounts showcase the breadth of our work, from safeguarding learners and young people, to supporting education professionals and maintaining public confidence in the education workforce.

“As our role evolves, it is important that we remain sustainable and able to meet our statutory responsibilities. Looking ahead, we are committed to ensuring we have the right foundations in place to continue delivering our role as the independent regulator for education in Wales effectively.

“We will continue to listen, engage, and work collaboratively with our registrants and stakeholders as we plan for the future.”

The Annual Report and Accounts 2025-26 have been published alongside the EWC’s Welsh Language Standards Monitoring Report 2025-26, Annual Equality Report 2025-26, and Fitness to Practise Annual Report 2025-26.

The full suite is available to read now on the EWC’s website.
