Welcome to our newly elected Council Chairperson

We are pleased to share that Geraint Williams has been elected as the new Chair of the Education Workforce Council.

Geraint, who first joined the Council in March 2023, was elected to the role by his fellow members following the news that current Chairperson, Eithne Hughes, will be standing down.

He brings to the role a wealth of experience from across the Welsh education sector including his current role as Principal and Chief Executive of St David’s Catholic College, Cardiff. Prior to becoming Principal and Chief Executive, Geraint was a science teacher and senior leader with responsibility for governance, safeguarding, wellbeing, and pastoral care at the college.

Congratulating Geraint on his appointment, EWC Chief Executive, Lisa Winstone said “We’re so pleased to welcome Geraint as the new Chair of the Council. His experience means he brings a deep understanding of both the challenges and opportunities facing the workforce in Wales.

“Geraint’s leadership and commitment align perfectly with the values of the EWC, and we look forward to working closely with him as he leads the Council in its important work.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to outgoing Chair, Eithne for her dedication, commitment, and the valuable contribution she has made to the Council and the wider work of the EWC.”

Eithne Hughes said “It has been a privilege to serve as Chair of the Council and to work with such a dedicated and professional team. I wish Geraint every success in his new role and know the Council will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

Incoming Chair, Geraint Williams, said “I’m honoured to take on the role of EWC Council Chairperson. The Council plays such an important role in safeguarding, upholding professionalism, and maintaining public trust in the education workforce.

“I’d like to thank Eithne for her leadership over the last two years and look forward to working with my fellow Council members, EWC staff, and partners to continue to support that vital work.”

Geraint will take on the role of Council Chairperson from 1 December 2025.
