Fitness to Practise case study: professional boundaries

Physical contact can sometimes be necessary, but it must always be appropriate and proportionate. In our latest case study, we look at an example of where a registrant was suspended following inappropriate physical contact with a learner, and offer practical lessons you should take from it.

Have you checked your record recently?

It’s extremely important that you keep your details on the register accurate and up to date. You can check and update your record at any time using your 24/7 access to MyEWC.

Council updates

Recruitment has opened for new members to our Council

We regulate a large and diverse workforce serving learners and young people, parents/guardians, and communities across Wales. To do this role effectively, it is important that our Council benefits from a broad range of perspectives and experiences. The role calls for independent thinking, constructive contribution to strategic discussions, integrity, and a strong commitment to equality, inclusion, and the Welsh language. To find out more, visit the Welsh Government Public Appointments website. Applications close 16:00 on 18 February.

Seeking views on our draft Strategic Plan 2026-29

The draft Strategic Plan sets out our priorities for the next three years and is underpinned by four key objectives. It sets out how we intend to deliver our core statutory functions.

We are keen to hear from a wide range of individuals, including those from diverse backgrounds, parents/guardians, and partner organisations across education and regulation.

You can read the draft plan, and respond, on our website. The consultation closes at 12:00 on Friday, 13 March 2026.

Next council meeting

The next meeting of our Council will be held on Thursday 19 March, in the EWC offices. Any member of the public can come and observe. More information about past meetings, and to register your interest in observing are on our Council meetings page.

Recruitment and retention: trends, challenges, and policy pathways

In November, we hosted a panel of education experts to share their unique and honest opinions on recruitment and retention in Wales, alongside our own data and policy research. We recorded the event, and it’s now available to watch back on our YouTube channel.

Consultation response

We’ve published our response to Welsh Government’s consultation on revised Professional Standards for Assisting Teaching, Teaching and Leadership.

Professionally Speaking 2026

Did you miss our Professionally Speaking event in January 2026? Professor Kelly Mackintosh came to explore learner behaviour and the power of physical activity. A recording of the event is now available to watch back on our YouTube channel.
