NQT Induction and COVID-19
NQT Induction and COVID-19

We recognise that newly qualified teachers (NQTs) in Wales will be understandably anxious about the potential impact of the coronavirus restrictions on the completion of their induction. Those involved in the induction process will also have many questions about how they can support their NQTs through this time.

The Welsh Government and the regional school improvement consortia have published a number of resources to help NQTs and their schools to make sense of, and adapt to temporary changes.

Welsh Government temporary guidance on statutory induction

In April, the Welsh Government issued temporary guidance on statutory induction for NQTs to support them and provide a way forward. The regional school improvement consortia have issued a letter to schools  which summarises this guidance for those involved in the induction process.

In addition, the consortia have also produced a frequently asked questions document in response to questions from NQTs and their mentors.

These resources should be used in conjunction with the Welsh Government’s temporary guidance.

Professional experiences

The regional school improvement consortia have compiled a comprehensive list of professional learning opportunities for NQTs. See the full list of professional learning opportunities .

Recording professional experiences

NQTs are encouraged to record the hours they spend undertaking professional learning and teaching during the summer term. This should be done using the continuity of teaching and learning form .

Completed forms should be uploaded to the 'Record of Attendance' tab of the Induction Profile upon completion of 15, 30, 45 and 60 sessions. This is done in a similar way to uploading a record of attendance form. Please note that 3x1 hours of professional learning equate to 1 session.

Once the NQT has completed all the professional learning they intend to undertake during summer 2020, completed continuity of teaching and learning forms should be e-mailed toThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
