Social media are web-based applications that allow people to create and exchange content. The popularity of social media has grown rapidly in recent years with widespread use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn as well as e-mail, texting and instant messaging.
When used responsibly and appropriately social media can offer several benefits for practitioners such as:
- to build and maintain professional relationships
- to give access to support networks, a means to discuss professional issues and share good practice
- access to professional learning opportunities and / or educational resources
However, there are also a number of dangers and pitfalls that practitioners need to be aware of if they decide to use social media. In fact, we have experienced a steady rise in cases referred to us relating to social media misuse.
To help practitioners better understand how to use social media appropriately we have developed a Guide to using social media responsibly . The guide should be read in conjunction with the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice as the code sets out the key principles of good conduct and practice for registrants.
We hope you find the guide useful and if you have any queries about our fitness to practise work you can e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
