Under the Education (Wales) Act 2014, we were required to establish and maintain a Register of Education Practitioners (the Register) in Wales. In accordance with the Education Workforce Council (Main Functions) (Wales) Regulations 2015, as amended, registration is a statutory requirement for:

In accordance with these regulations, employers have a legal obligation to ensure that their employees are registered with us before commencing work. This applies to employees working on a full-time, part-time (including hourly) or supply basis.

 

Registered school teachers

if they currently work, or intend to work as qualified school teachers  (with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)) in a maintained school in Wales. They must be registered in the category of school teacher.

Please note: School teachers who are required to complete the statutory Induction period in Wales and have not yet done so will be given ‘provisional’ registration status only (subject to meeting the suitability criteria).

Registered further education (FE) teachers

if they currently work, or intend to work as FE teachers in FE institutions in Wales. They must be registered in the category of FE teacher.

School learning support workers

if they currently work, or intend to work as learning support workers in maintained school in Wales. They must be registered in the category of school learning support worker

FE learning support workers

if they currently work, or intend to work as learning support worker in FE institution in Wales. They must be registered in the category of further education learning support worker

Work-based learning practitioner

if they currently work, or intend to work as a work-based learning practitioner (e.g. trainer, assessor, learning deliverer, coach or mentor) for or on behalf of a work-based learning provider. This also includes those practitioners who co-ordinate the delivery of work-based learning, such as those involved in management / leadership roles and quality assurance staff.

Youth worker

if they currently work, or intend to work as a person who provides youth development services for or on behalf of a local authority, school, FE institution or voluntary organisation in Wales. This category of registration is subject to mandatory qualification requirements .
