If you trained as a teacher outside of Wales, you may be able to apply for your qualification to be recognised by us. If your application is successful, we will award you Qualified Teacher Status which will enable you to teach in Wales. If you completed your initial teacher training in England, your award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is recognised in Wales.
You can apply for recognition as a teacher in Wales if you qualified as a teacher in Scotland, Northern Ireland or the EEA. You can do this by completing one of the relevant forms listed below;
Application for QTS recognition in Wales for school teachers from Scotland
Application for QTS recognition in Wales for school teachers from Northern Ireland
- Application for QTS recognition in Wales for school teachers from EEA (PDF 116k)
Upon receipt of your form, we will assess the application against the regulations governing the award of QTS and, if awarded, we will issue you with a teacher reference number and QTS certificate. If the application for QTS is declined, you will be notified of this in writing.
Please note: School teachers who have been recommended for QTS by the States of Guernsey Education Council can also apply for direct recognition of their status in Wales.
The following groups are not recognised as qualified school teachers in Wales and are therefore not eligible for registration in the category of school teacher:
- School teachers who trained in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA and who have been awarded QTS by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) in England.
- FE qualified teachers who are recognised as qualified school teachers by the TRA and are therefore eligible to work as qualified school teachers in England only (including those who hold QTLS).
- Any person qualified outside of Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and the EEA.
