Information for final year trainees and newly qualified practitioners
Information for final year trainees and newly qualified practitioners

To ensure trainees and newly qualified practitioners fully understand what they need to do in order to work in Wales, we deliver sessions at each training institution. These take place between September and June and we highly recommend that you attend. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, further scheduled sessions have been cancelled. Our introductory guides for trainees provide essential information about EWC registration.

Students undertaking programmes of initial teacher education (ITE) (for school teachers) in Wales leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

When you qualify as a teacher in Wales, you will receive notification of the award of QTS from us. The following arrangements are made in order for us to issue QTS certificates to you.

  1. Once we know that you are due to complete your teacher training course, we will issue you with a unique teacher reference number via e-mail to both your university and personal e-mail addresses. You will retain this throughout your career.
  2. After all course results are verified by the relevant examination board, each ITE provider in Wales submits the results to us confirming that QTS should be awarded to successful students.
  3. We will issue certificates of the award of QTS to all successful students on 1 August.

In order to practise as a school teacher in Wales, you must be registered with us. Please refer to the applying for registration for further guidance.

Trainee teachers undertaking employment-based training under the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) and Teach First Cymru

We are responsible for confirming the award of QTS for those undertaking the GTP. If you meet the QTS standards by the end of the programme, the recommending body will complete a recommendation for QTS form and submit it to us. This will enable us to issue you with a teacher reference number and a certificate confirming the award of QTS.

A programme of visits is scheduled for those completing a programme of employment-based training under the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) and Teach First Cymru. These visits are arranged with the three regional centres of teacher training. Their contact details can be found here.

Students undertaking courses of post-compulsory education and training (eg PCET; PGCE (FE)) in Wales

It is important that PCET students intending to teach in further education (FE) institutions in Wales for the first time register with us before commencing their first teaching post. This includes supply work.

Please refer to the applying for registration section for further guidance.
