Where can I undertake induction?
Induction can take place in the following settings;
- maintained schools in Wales
- non-maintained special schools in Wales
- further education institutions and independent schools in Wales which meet the criteria set out in the Welsh Government guidance ‘Induction for newly qualified teachers in Wales’
- schools or FEI in England provided that the school/institution and the teaching responsibilities meet England’s induction criteria
Induction cannot take place in;
- pupil referral units
- independent schools that do meet the Education (Induction Arrangements for School Teachers) (Wales) (Amendments) Regulations 2015
- independent nursery schools and other early years settings, unless they meet the criteria specified in the Regulations
- schools requiring special measures as judged by Estyn
How long is the induction period?
NQTs employed on a full time basis must complete three school terms. NQTs employed on a part time basis, or those undertaking Induction via short term supply work must complete 380 sessions. A session is defined as a full morning or afternoon of employment in a school.
Is there a time limit on completing induction?
There is no time limit on how long Induction will take to complete. Once a NQT is registered with EWC all periods of employment undertaken as a qualified teacher of one session or more must count towards Induction and must be recorded with the EWC. There is no flexibility regarding this and neither NQTs nor schools can request that a period of employment completed as a qualified teacher does not count.
Can cover supervisor work count towards induction?
No, only periods of employment undertaken as a qualified teacher can count towards Induction.
How do I access my induction profile?
Firstly EWC must be notified that you are undertaking Induction. For NQTs employed within schools the Induction Notification Form should be submitted. For short term supply NQTs, the Short Term Supply Teacher Notification Form should be submitted.
Once we have processed the forms, you will need to create an online account with EWC via ‘MyEWC’. Before creating your account you must be sure that the EWC holds the most up-to-date e-mail address for you, you will not be able to create/access your account without it
Make sure you log into your account in the language (Welsh or English) that you wish to complete your Induction Profile.
What happens if I move schools during my induction period?
The Induction Notification Form must be submitted to EWC within 10 working days of your employment at the school commencing. Your old school should also submit the Induction Funding Claim Form to EWC so we can update your record with the number of sessions you completed at the school.
What happens if my employment at my school ends during my induction period?
The Induction Funding Claim Form should be submitted when your employment ends. EWC will then update your record with the number of sessions completed, and if applicable release funding to the school for Induction support provided.
If you are moving to a new school the Induction Notification Form must be submitted to EWC within 10 working days of your employment commencing at your new school.
If you are going to continue your Induction via short term supply work then the Short Term Supply Teacher Notification Form must be submitted within 10 working days of your first session of supply teaching work.
How do I start induction?
To start Induction you must hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and must be registered with the EWC in the category of school teacher. If you are employed within a school the Induction Notification Form must be submitted to EWC within 10 working days of your employment commencing. If you are undertaking short term supply work then the Induction as a Short Term Supply Teacher Notification Form must be submitted to EWC within 10 working days of your first session of supply teaching work.
When will I be allocated an External Verifier?

How will my EV contact me?
If you are employed within a school your EV will contact your school in order to arrange a convenient time to meet with you and your induction mentor.

How does my Induction Mentor access my Induction Profile?
EWC will create online access for Induction Mentors (IMs) upon receipt of the Induction Notification Form. An activation email will be sent to the IMs email address recorded on the Notification Form. The email will contain the username and a link to create a password. IMs will log into their account using the Induction Mentor login screen.

How do I record my short term supply sessions towards my Induction?
You will only be able to log short term supply sessions if you have already submitted the Short Term Supply Teacher Notification Form to EWC. Short term supply sessions should be logged with EWC no later than 15 working days from the date of completion.
- Go to ‘MyEWC’
- follow the on-screen instructions to create an account or if you have already created an account log in;
- select ‘My Registered Practitioner Record’;
- select ‘View Induction Details’ button;
- scroll to the bottom of the page and select ‘Update induction sessions - short term supply’;
- The session information will be updated on your record within 1 working day.
Each session you log as a short term supply teacher will also need to be verified by the Headteacher in the 'Record of attendance form for short term supply teachers' section of the induction profile (which should be maintained off-line and uploaded to the online profile in line with the required timescales).
How do I find out about what support I should be receiving during Induction?
The Welsh Government guidance document ‘Induction for Newly Qualified Teachers in Wales (revised July 2017)’ sets out the roles and responsibilities for all involved in the Induction programme in Wales. It also sets out the support that NQTs are entitled during Induction.
